Virtuaalimatkailua | Virtual travels

Ystäväni palasi viime vuoden matkakohteeseemme punaisten postilaatikkojen maassa. Täälä kertaa en tenttikiireiden takia voinut lähteä mukaan, mutta viettävät perheen kesken syyslomaviikkoa samassa kylässä kuin mekin viime syksynä vietimme. Ikävä Englantiin on minulla jo kova ja mielessä pyörii vaikka mitä matkaehdotuksia seuraaville kerroille. Siskoni poikineen haluaisi lähteä myös mukaan joskus, siinä onkin majoittamisen kanssa sumplittavaa. Ystävät maailmalla ovat parasta, mitä toivoa voi: sinne on niin paljon helpompi lähteä, kun ei tarvitse kaivaa tuohta asuinkortteeriakin varten. Seuraavina vuosina toivoisin pääseväni tutustumaan myös Skotlantiin, mistä ystäväni perhe on lähtöisin. Englannissa olisi paljon koluttavia paikkoja jäljellä: Bathin historiallinen kaupunki, nummet, lukemattomia pikkukyliä… Oi että! Tässä kuitenkin vain kuvien muodossa matkailua toistaiseksi, myös teille muille tunnelmoitavaksi. Niin ja lisää viime vuoden matkasta voi lukea näistä posteista.

My friend is back in our holiday destination from last year, in the land of red postboxes. Because of my exams, I couldn’t go this year, but they’ll be having a splendid time with their whole family, in the same village we spent a week in last year. I’m missing England and there are so many travel ideas in my head already. My sister and her sons would like to join me too, and that’ll be a lot to organise where to accomodate everyone. My friends abroad are absolutely treasures: no more digging into pockets to find a place to stay. In the coming years I wish to go and explore Scotland too because that is where my friend’s family is from. But there are a lot of interesting places left to roam in England as well: the historical town of Bath, the moors, oh all the small villages! Here is some eye candy for you fellow Anglophiles ;) You can see more of our travels in these posts, although I only published them in Finnish back then.

Matkalla Englannissa: Cambridge | On the road in England: Cambridge

Jos minulta kysyttäisiin, niin suosikkikaupunkini Englannissa olisi ehdottomasti Cambridge. Historiaa tihkuvien kiviseinien välisillä kapeilla kaduilla voi kuvitella vuosisataisten älykköjen matkan, samaan aikaan kun ohi porhaltavat pyörillään nykyiset opiskelevat nuoret. Cambridge on Oxfordia pienempi ja helpommin lähestyttävä, eikä aivan niin täynnä turisteja. Ja niin kaunis kaikessa rosoisuudessaan.

Cambridgessa satoi keväisenä vierailupäivänämme kaikkea veden ja rakeiden kautta lumeen ja tuuli oli jäätävä. Silti väliin ehti myös aurinkoa – perienglantilainen, vaihtuva sää siis. Illalla jäimme collegen porttejen taakse jumiin ja tekeennyimme opiskelijoiksi päästäksemme portieerin ohi ulos. Mahtava paikka ja mahtava päivä seikkailuineen!

If you asked me, I’d tell you Cambridge is my favourite city in England. The stone walls that ooze history shading the narrow streets, you can just imagine the journey of intellectuals of centuries in there, at the same time as the current students swoosh their bicycles past you. Cambridge is smaller and easier to approach than Oxford, and not as much tourist-packed either. And oh so beautiful in all its roughness.

During our spring visit, everything possible come down from the skies, from rain to hale to snow, and with a bitter wind. Still, we could get sunshine in the middle of all that – a perfect example of British weather changing. At night, we got stuck behind the gates of one of the colleges, and had to pretend to be students to get out through the portier’s lodge. What a place and adventures we’d had!

Matkalla Englannissa: Silsoe & Wrest Park | On the road in England: Silsoe & Wrest Park

Ihana Silsoe osasi yllättää todella englantilaisilla taloillaan. Rakastan näitä pieniä kyliä!

Englannissa liikkuessa tulee aina välillä vastaan yksinkertaisen vastustamattomia paikkoja, joista ei ole koskaan kuullutkaan ja jotka silti vetävät puoleensa. Silsoen pieni kylä oli yksi näistä paikoista. Lähdimme sinne Wrest Park-nimisen kartanopuisto perässä, mutta sen lisäksi sieltä löytyi viehättävä englantilaiskylä. Kaikki tämä hyvin läheltä ystäväni kotia, aivan yllättäen.

When on the road in England, we often come across these simply irresistable places which you’ve never heard of before and they still look so adorable. The village of Silsoe was one of these place. We left to see Wrest Park, a vast garden and parkland area in the Wrest estate, but also found a very charming English village. All of this out of a sudden very close to my friend’s home.

Wrest Park on yksi todella näyttävistä, mutta silti vähiten tunnetuimmista puutarhoista Englannissa. Kuuluisan Capability Brownin luonnonmukaisen tyylin vastaisesti, Wrest Park on rakennettu enemmän muotopuutarhan oppien mukaan ja siellä sekoittuu mitä erilaisempia puutarhatyylejä. 150 vuoden aikana rakentunutta puutarha inspiroi Ranskan Versailles.

Wrest Park is one of the most magnificent yet least-known gardens in England. Unlike ‘Capability’ Brown’s natural landscape styling, favoured during the late 18th century, Wrest Park’s formal gardens provide a fascinating history of gardening styles, laid out over 150 years and inspired by the great gardens of Versailles in France.

Puutarhan paraatipaikalla seisoo valtava kartanomainen ranskalaistyyliä edustava päärakennus sekä useita näyttäviä sivurakennuksia. Wrest Park kuului aikoinaan merkittävälle de Greyn perheelle, jotka toimivat Kentin jaarleina vuodesta 1280 aina 1800-luvulle asti. Nykyinen, kolmas, kartanorakennus on valmistunut 1834, ja se edustaa Englannissa harvinaista ranskalaista kartanotyyliä – sen on rakentanutkin ranskalainen arkkitehti.

1800-luvun alussa talo toimi Yhdysvaltain suurlähettilään asuinpaikkana, mutta on nyttemmin siirtynyt englantilaiseen omistukseen. Monet talon huoneista ovat myös yleisön nähtävillä, ja paikallinen arvorakennuksia ylläpitävä taho järjestää siellä myös näyttelijöin elävöitettyjä historiahetkiä.

The gardens are overlooked by a stylish French-style mansion and contain wonderful garden buildings. Wrest Park belonged to the powerful de Grey family, Earls of Kent, from 1280 into the 19th century. The present house here was built in 1834 and is the third on this site. It is a rare example in England of the French chateau style in architecture – built, not surprisingly, by a French architect.

The house was used in the early 19th century as a residence for the US Ambassador, but it is now used by the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering. The state rooms can be seen by visitors, and are now administered by English Heritage, who offer a program of regular historical re-enactments in the park.

Kartanon laajoilla mailla (yhteensä yli 35 hehtaaria) on eri puutarhatyyleille varattuja alueita aina 1700-luvulta vuoteen 1850. Kaiken jakaa kahtia pitkä, muodollinen kanava, jossa on Thomas Archerin suunnittelema barokkipaviljonki.

The extensive gardens (90 acres in all) at Wrest Park are a mixture of three distinct gardening styles spanning the years from 1700-1850. The centre is split by a long, formal canal punctuated by a Barocque pavilion designed by Thomas Archer.

Puistossa on tekoklassillisia elementtejä, jotka jakavat alueita erilaisiin näkymiiin. Puiston epämuodollisen puolen suunnitteli Capability Brown noin vuonna 1758. Wrest Parkissa järjestetään myös vuosittain puutarhamessut.

| Mock classical ruins add objects of interest to the garden vistas, and the informal grounds were laid out by Capability Brown around 1758. Wrest Park hosts an annual garden show in late May.

Silsoen kylästä kertovat parhaiten itse kuvat. Hyvin englantilaista, eikö vain? Vehreän puisto- ja peltomaiseman keskellä ryhmittyvät perinteiset englantilaistalot, pieni kirkko sekä söpö pikku pubi.

The village of Silsoe itself is best described in photos. Very English, don’t you think? In the green park and field one could find a group of traditional English houses, a small church and a cute little pub.

Kylä oli kuvankaunis, eikä edes kaukana Lontoosta. Aikoinaan Wrest Parkin kartanon työvoimaa asuttanut kylä tunnetaan nykyään valkoisiksi maalatuista taloistaan ja niiden ihanista yksityiskohdista, kuten savupiipuista.

| Silsoe is a picturesque village in Bedfordshire, north of London. Silsoe grew around the Wrest Park estate to house its working force. Nowadays Silsoe itself could be known for the abundance of whitewashed period homes and their gorgeous features, such as the chimneys.
